5. As regards (e), I may state it is the intention of the Directors to apply for the services of a Chinese licentiate of the local College of Medicine to treat the patients who may prefer Western methods, thereby gradually introducing Western science into the minds of the native population, which result, I submit, is fully demonstrated by the steady increase in the number of patients now being treated by Dr. Chung in the Tung-Wa Hospital.
6. Should this application meet with the approval of His Excellency the Governor, the Chinese community will undertake to subscribe the necessary funds for the erection of the proposed institution, which is estimated to cost $30,000.
7. Needless to say, this institution, upon its completion, will be subject to the supervision of the visiting Surgeon appointed by the Government for the time being, as is the case with the Tung-Wa Hospital.
8. In conclusion, I may add that the Directors are anxious not to allow the present warm enthusiasm amongst the Chinese Community to cool down. As originators of the scheme, they are equally anxious to direct it to a successful issue before their terms of office expires in December next. They, therefore, request that His Excellency may be so good as to transmit this application to the Secretary of State for the Colonies without delay and to obtain His Lordship's decision by telegraph.
I have &c.

Chairman of the Directors,
